Annual Letter ____________________________________
April 5, 2011
Dear Friends,
As I write this letter, the realization that our “new” library is two years old is certainly hard to imagine. This past year has been another exciting one as we celebrated the retirement of Carole Winkleblack after 16 years with us as the Marshalltown Library Director. We appreciate all she did for this library. We are now privileged to have a new Director, Glenda Davis-Driggs. If you did not have the opportunity to come to the Open House in January, please stop in and meet her in person at the library.
The Marshalltown Public Library continues to be a very busy place. More than 800 people visited the library every day it was open – that is more than 250,000 visits in 2010, an 11% increase over 2009. The meeting rooms continue to be popular, with twice the use this past year versus the previous. The large community meeting room and four group study rooms are used by a wide variety of state associations, community clubs and organizations, students and area businesses. An average of 220 people use the library’s Internet stations each day the library is open, an increase of 62% over 2009. Finally, 14,450 people attended 450 library programs in 2010. The statistics are impressive; what a great library we have here in Marshalltown!
Our Friends of the Library funds are so important to the library. We are proud that we were able to help boost the library’s offerings this past year with a second Early Literacy Station in the Youth Department, funds for additional adult programming, youth programs including LOL (Literature Over Lunch) at the high school, and funding for library books and media totaling $15,000!
Thank you for your support of the Friends of the Library annual campaign in the past and your renewed membership as we continue to assist our library in providing educational, recreational, and learning opportunities for our community. I hope that you will continue your membership in Friends of the Library. Please remember that your contribution is tax deductible.
Thank you again for your support,
Janelle Carter, Friends of the Library President
