Library Cards and Check-out
A Marshalltown Public Library borrower’s card will be issued to any resident of Iowa who is at least 3 years of age. Children 3 to 11 will be issued a youth card which must be signed by a parent or legal guardian who is responsible for items checked out by the child. Identification with a permanent current address (drivers’ license; utility bill; school ID, etc.) must be shown by anyone applying for a borrower’s card. Lost cards can be replaced for $1.00.
You must present a current library card or other proof of identification to check out library materials.
The library collects a variety of materials for check-out--including books, books on tape and compact disc, videos and DVD's, magazines and newspapers, pamphlets, puppets, and book/tape sets.
Renewals are welcomed and can be made in person or by phone (754-5738). Reserved or high demand materials cannot be renewed.
Fines are assessed at the rate of $0.20 per day per item for overdue materials. Patrons who lose or damage books or other items will be charged replacement cost plus a $3.00 service charge.
Books and other items may be returned 24 hours per day at the library’s drive-up book and audio-visual return located on State Street just west of the library’s entrance.

Other Information on the New Library Building
About the Library
The Marshalltown Public library was established as a free municipal library in 1898. It moved to its present location, at 36 N. Center Street, in 1902 after Andrew Carnegie donated $30,000 for the construction of a new library building. The Leise Addition, just west of the original Carnegie building, was added in 1975.
The library is a department of the City of Marshalltown and is funded primarily by municipal tax dollars. A seven member Board of Library Trustees sets policy and oversees the budget and operations of the library. The Board holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. View the current meeting agenda and the previous meeting's minutes.
Seventeen full and part time employees staff the library, and over 50 volunteers are dedicated to providing excellent library service to Marshalltown and Marshall County.
The library's 2007 Annual Report
As of June 30, 2007, the library’s collection is comprised of over 90,000 items. The library checked out approximately 233,000 print and audio-visual titles in 2007, an average of 68 items per hour. Throughout the year, children and adults attended a variety of library-sponsored programs, used library meeting rooms, logged on to one of the library’s six free Internet stations, sought help with reference and research questions, or browsed through the library’s 233 magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
The Marshalltown Public Library’s “Statement of Purpose,” long range plan, and policies are contained in Marshalltown Public Library Policies, available at any library service desk.
The Marshalltown Public Library meets Iowa public library standards and is accredited by the State Library of Iowa.
Meeting Rooms
Marshalltown Public Library has two meeting rooms. The conference room on the second floor accommodates approximately 10 to 12 people, and the basement meeting room can seat approximately 30. The upstairs conference room is available any time the library is open; the basement meeting room can be used on Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. There is no charge for meeting rooms, and reservations can be made on a first come, first served basis by calling the Reference Desk at 754-5738.
Library meeting rooms are available to individuals, organizations, and business groups for purposes that reflect the educational, cultural, social and recreational role the library plays. Organizations using library meeting rooms must comply with the library’s directive of equal access to all community members. Meeting rooms may not be used to sell merchandise, facilitate ordering, solicit later sales, nor can admission be charged.
